Wal-Mart draws huge crowd - of applicants

As the world's largest private employer, Wal-Mart is used to being greeted by large numbers of applicants almost every time it opens a new store.

But the 6,000-plus people who applied for jobs at the new Supercenter in Cleveland's Steelyard Commons took everyone, even Wal-Mart, by surprise.

"We had to recount [the applications] three times," said Mia Masten, Wal-Mart's director of corporate affairs, Midwest division.

When thousands of people compete for a few hundred ordinary jobs, trend watchers say it's an indication not only of a less-than-stellar economy but also of a workforce short on marketable skills.

The huge number of applicants wouldn't have caught anyone's eye had these been skilled, high-paying jobs, the types of positions that thousands of people always seek.

But these were regular retail jobs with low-to-average wages and benefits, not the sort of positions typically in high demand. Target wouldn't disclose the number of people who applied to work at its Steelyard Commons store.

Sadly, few of the people interested in working at Cleveland's first Wal-Mart actually got a job.

Those 6,000 people were competing for some 300 positions. That means for every one person hired, 19 people walked away empty-handed.

It could have been worse. In Illinois recently, Masten said, 25,000 and 15,000 people applied at two Wal-Mart stores in the Chicago area, and neither of those is a large Supercenter.

"Sometimes, it's easier to get into [someplace exclusive] than a job at Wal-Mart, statistically speaking," she said.

Friday's announcement that Democratic Senators Diane Feinstein and Chuck Schumer will support the nomination of Judge Michael Mukasey for Attorney General is a shocker to be sure, but certainly not totally unexpected. Feinstein is a repugnant in sheep's clothing and Schumer is nothing more than an opportunist and "player".

With these two "turncoat" Dems on board, Michael Mukasey will be the next Attorney General of the United States irrespective of his less-than-spectacular stance on waterboarding as torture. Mukasey should have at least provided an answer akin to that of former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart's reply to the definition of "pornography". Justice Stewart answered that I don't exactly know how to define it but I know it when I see it. That type of answer should have been forthcoming from Judge Mukasey in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. It was not!

The vote by the full Senate is a foregone conclusion. Mukasey will be confirmed as the next Attorney General of the United States. He will no doubt allow for torture of detainees based on his view of the prerogatives of executive power - which in his mind are virtually unlimited.

For Mukasey, there is very little that can be denied a sitting President of the United States when it comes to national security.

How the Democrats can expect to continue on as the loyal opposition is beyond this writer's comprehension. They have virtually cannibalized themselves overnight since last Fall's seemingly promising electoral returns. They are nothing more than enablers of a drunken administration - drunk with power, revenge, lust, greed and world empire mania.

At the very least we should all innudate Feinstein's office with phone calls on Monday before the vote by the full United States Senate. There were approximately 25,000 people at City Hall in San Francisco on Saturday for the Anti-War Rally.

Cindy Sheehan spoke briefly at Dolores Park before the assembled crowd after the rally marched from City Hall to the park.

Sheehan will run against "Nanny" Pelosi ["everything's off the table, hell - damn table's broken!"] next year. Pelosi shouldn't be just afraid - but, very, very afraid.

Bush now wants to give blanket immunity to the telecom companies who allowed themselves to be co-opted into an unholy alliance with his administration to spy on average American citizens under the direction of the NSA to help fight terrorism. What a crock! They knew what they were doing and they knew they were under no obligation to wilfully violate the 4th amendment - the right to privacy in one's effects.

What should have tipped off these so-called innocent telecoms was the fact that the Bush Regime was engaged in this sort of activity well before September 11, 2001. In fact, the starting date could be placed in February 2001, just after Inauguration Day for GWB-43rd.

Now Congress is considering granting Mr. Bush just such legislation in his relentless pursuit to continue with such wholesale spying on the American people. Bush needs this insurance policy for the telecom firms to "buy" their continued support for his illegal program of surveillance on average American citizens. Without it, that support would surely evaporate and along with it his chances for prolonging this most despicable of domestic programs.

Why would Congress continue to roll over to this most renegade of U.S. presidents. There are many reasons but suffice it to say that the Democrats in Congress - as a whole - are simply not "there" on the need to clarify their intentions to themselves and to the American people. Democrats have not reached that point where they will dig in and give no more. Republicans are good at that. Democrats are inherently deficient in this capacity. They simply do not have that toughness or resolve.

This resolve is necessary because the Republicans will flail the Democrats for lack of patriotism and treasonous behavior unless they give unstinting and unquestioning fealty to Bush's totalitarian approach to the fight on terrorism. The so-called fight against terrorism should now be seen for what it really is, the frightening prospect of an ever-swifter onslaught on our civil society and the complete "lock down" of all of U.S. society under the heel & boot of the Bush Doctrine of pre-emption - the pre-emption upon the U.S. citizenry.

The FISA emergency legislation approved by Congress on August 4, 2007 is due to expire on February 4, 2008. Unless it is allowed to expire the self-inflicted wounds upon this country by a rogue elite group of NeoCons will be made permanent and the transformation of U.S. society will be complete. It will be a Garrison State based on permanent war and conflict and infused with the doctrine of Fear & Terror as the guiding principles of a military state in perpetual military mode.

But the only true indicator comes from the Administration itself, but not from Bush. No, the man who is really running the show is none other than Darth Vader Incarnate - Vice President Dick [Scary Movie II] Cheney. He's a walking, talking Texas Chainsaw Massacre all unto himself! If it's war that this administration wants, it's the war being pushed for by Dick Cheney and his Neo-Cabal "bitter-enders!"

With Russia warning the U.S. against such an attack, if it does occur then who knows where it will end - World III??? Specifically,

TASER WARS - [AND WHERE WAS KERRY WHILE THIS HAPENED "ON HIS WATCH"] - HE FORGOT TO "REPORT FOR DUTY!"

A Florida student, Andrew Meyer, was tasered in full view of an audience gathered to listen to U.S. Senator John Kerry. Whether it was a practical joke as some evidence offered by the authorities would suggest it begs the question, should an open forum end in needless violence when precipitated by the mere exercise of "free speech." Violence?

This writer saw a portion of the YouTube video and aside from being - perhaps - annoying and boisterous - there was absolutely no pretext to inflict the kind of pain that comes from a taser. Kerry indicated that he had no idea that the individual had been subjected to a taser until after he had left the premises.

So much for free speech in America - practical joke or not. Frankly, the thrust of the question - why did Kerry not contest the 2004 presidential election as played out in the state of Ohio - with evidence of disenfranchisement of African-American voters - was exceedingly on point. Having looked at the entire incident on YouTube - I am greatly troubled. The individual, Andrew Meyer, while admittedly boisterous and "amped-up" was asking very pertinent and critical questions about the 2004 presidential race and made a key reference to Greg Palast's book - "Armed Mad House".

I would invite listeners to view the YouTube link of this incident and decide for yourselves.

Rather than belabor this matter any further, I'll allow the video to make my case. Some will view it and say the individual was way too self-serving, was showboating, was "acting up". Others will say that perhaps he was using the only means at his disposal to publicly vet - for the first time in a meaningful way - the true legacy of that fateful 2004 presidential campaign - the disenfranchisement of a sizable block of voters and the subsequent rigged election of the current president.

At the very least, I would hope that you might forward on the link to your friends and acquaintances and allow for greater public awareness of what many of us have felt was being kept in the dark by the Republican Party.

BUSH - A MAJORITY OF "ONE" AS HE KICKS ASS [WITH OUR REALITY]

Well, Cowboy George swooped into Australia and streaked down the flight steps to quite readily inform Australian Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile - when asked about Iraq - that we're "kicking ass" in Iraq. That should be THE snapshot of the entire Bush Administration since September 11, 2001. We just plain damn like to "kick ass" because that's what we do best "where I come from."

We've also learned this week [courtesy of Sydney Blumenthal on Salon.com] that Bush was informed in the Oval Office on September 18, 2002 by then-acting CIA Director, George Tenet, that Iraq had NO WMD's. "Tenet told me he briefed the president personally," one of the former CIA officers informed Blumenthal, referring to the Oval Office briefing session on Sept. 18, 2002.

The Blumenthal article goes on to recount how Tyler Drumheller, CIA's chief of clandestine operations for Europe, disclosed the fact that the Foreign Minister of Iraq, Naji Nasri, had presented evidence to his agency showing that Saddam had NO WMD's. But as two senior CIA officials informed Blumenthal for the article, not only was Naji dead-on correct but that Deputy CIA Director John McLaughlin decided to go instead with another Iraqi source, dubbed "Curve Ball" - who said Saddam did in fact possess WMD's. Never mind that Curve Ball was finally revealed to be nothing more than a former Iraqi taxi cab driver posing as a chemical engineer.

What is even more heinous in this trail of events is that none of the U.S. Senators or U.S. Representatives who voted for the Authorization for the Use of Force Resolution in October 2002 knew any of this secret intelligence. George Tenet never revealed his Oval Office revelation to George Bush to anyone else in the CIA or Congress but instead kept this information under "lock & key", never to refer to it again. Ditto for the disclosure by Tyler Drumheller.

As a CIA officer bluntly stated ""Bush didn't give a fuck about the intelligence. He had his mind made up." As the officers continued to give credence to the Iraqi foreign minister's assertion of no Iraqi WMD's, a Tenet deputy told them "You haven't figured this out yet. This isn't about intelligence. It's about regime change."

So when Bush says "Mission Accomplished" or we're "kicking ass" it's really to say, "I'm George of the Jungle and what I say is what is". I say what is real and what is not. What is to be believed and what is not to be believed. After all this is what I REALLY mean when I say "I am the decider."

March 20, 2003 we invaded Iraq. Baghdad "bagged" in 3 days, more or less. Close to 4,000 U.S. soldiers dead. God knows how many Iraqis killed since then - estimates are close to 200,000.

Now after all that, we have to face the Bush War Machine and still another "Pep-Talk" about the absolutely urgent need to "Surge-On". Never mind the Maliki government has all but disappeared [Sunnis officially have resigned in all meaningful capacity] as all six ministers from Iraq's largest Sunni bloc tendered their resignation from Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's Shiite-led coalition government.

Enter the picture, General David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Clark Crocker. Petraeus has recently been spouting off about the positive effects of the "surge" and the marked decrease in violence since its inception. Backing up Petraeus will be Ambassador Crocker. Bush met privately at the Pentagon on Friday with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Defense Secretary Robert Gates with the intent of deciding how to proceed forward on Iraq.

"Petraeus did not participate in Friday's session,
but one senior U.S. official said the general, along with Ryan Crocker, U.S. ambassador to Iraq, probably would tell Bush and Congress in mid-September that the buildup had succeeded in making slow but sure progress on both the military and political fronts."

Offering an opposite analysis are Pentagon Generals Peter Pace[soon-to-retire Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff]



and George William Casey, Jr. Chief of Staff of the Army. They have both weighed in on the undue strain being placed upon the Army from the 15-month tour of duties and the all too short 12 months leave before the next reassignment back to Iraq. In effect, they have argued that the Army simply cannot sustain such a level of troop deployment.

Now enter the White House and "All Bets Are Off". Brings to mind that popular movie a short time ago - "Sideways." That's the only way to characterize the Bush Administration - whenever they are confronted with reality or attacked head-on --- they just go "Sideways." Disassemble is a better way to put it but the effect is the same. Truth/Reality get squashed and propaganda rules the day.

Despite the common belief (and statements to that effect) that the September report on the progress of the "surge" in Iraq would be written by Gen. David H. Petraeus and Ryan Crocker (U.S. Ambassador to Iraq), the report will actually be written by the White House, with input from various agencies. This was reported today in the Los Angeles Times, but it was buried deep within a story on the expected content of the report itself. In fact, it was nearly at the end of the story, rather than being front-and-center where it should be.

And finally, on the Keith Olbermann evening news show [Count Down-MSNBC] he asked MSNBC analyst General Wesley Clark his thoughts on the White House downplaying the meaningfulness of the Iraq benchmarks - benchmarks that Bush himself chose way back in May as a yardstick to measure U.S. progress in Iraq:

"Does that not make it difficult for the White House to argue now that this GAO report will not present a true picture of the situation in Iraq?" Olbermann asked MSNBC analyst General Wesley Clark

"Exactly right," replied Clark. "They should not be able to squirm out from underneath these standards. ... The American people are making a judgment every day as they see the results of the war. The benchmarks confirm that judgment, and this is a huge problem for the White House."

Well, by now, I think the reader is starting to get the picture. As the Bush Administration would put it - "don't confuse me with the facts, please!"

Come September 15 and the official Iraq Report [date now cited as September 11 or 12] - the "die is cast". No matter what the final official assessment --- or no matter which direction this administration will proceed on [withdrawal or "surge-on"] - INERTIA has set in. The end is already a foregone conclusion. The laws of Physics rule from here on in. The U.S. Army is Dog-Tired. They are War-Weary. They're not gonna be doing anything appreciably better --- their time in Iraq has come and gone. It is now up to a Political Settlement [LIKE THEY DID - FINALLY - IN IRELAND] - aka - "THE GOOD FRIDAY AGREEMENT"].

George, you're nothing but "Toe-Jam" as Rhea Perlman used to say as wasp-tongued waitress Carla Tortelli on "Cheers". You're just diseased and you infect everything you touch or handle. God what a monster your mother brought into the world. Speaking of Monsters, how is that old battle ax managing to stay upright these days - with those humongous, 1920 granny platform shoes. And, of course, her famous Katrina quote - those folks in the Super Dome never had it so good!

Comparing Vietnam to Iraq just puts the crowning touch on your "French Algiers" dilemma. Iraq is no Vietnam. Vietnam is certainly no Iraq.

Vietnam saw a regular, professional Army - the North Vietnamese/Viet Cong attacking the South. They did use proxies but the war was - from start to finish - a North Vietnam Regular Army Production.

Iraq, on the other hand, is just a pell-mell, free-for-all, open-ended Civil War, pitting religious tribe and/or ethnic group against religious tribe and/or ethnic group. Besides, these "feuds" are hundreds, if not, thousands of years old. Short of the reappearance of the Prophet Mohammad, Iraq is like a jar filled with several poisonous spiders. You get the picture.

Bush made his remarks in front of the safest of safe audiences - the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Before long, not even these folks will continue to provide him with a venue to spew forth his blather - aka - Linda Blair in "The Exorcist" (1973). Instead, he'll have to hunt down the "back-to-the-land" white Supremacists tribes in remote Idaho to continue his speechifying antics.

Major General Paul Eaton/Retired made his views on Bush's comparison of Iraq to Vietnam well known this past week.







Eaton: “My father’s name is engraved on the Viet Nam War Memorial. Killed in action after - missing in action for 38 years. I thought it was a bad idea to start going down this uh - this slink to Viet Nam during this speech. It was - it did not serve the country well, it does not serve the American fighting man and woman in Iraq well, and it certainly doesn’t serve the veterans well."

Even Republican Senator John Warner/Virginia - Secretary of the Navy under Nixon - said - of Bush's remarks on the Iraq/Vietnam comparison:

“I read it very carefully,” said Mr Warner. “I feel that there are no parallels, really. It’s a different type of situation.”

However you slice it or dice it, Mr. Bush is fast becoming what Joseph Stalin became just prior to his death. A doddering, disembodied, disconnected old ghost of a shadow. Mr. Bush needs to "Come to Jesus" like the good Christian he professes to be, fall down on his knees and ask the Good Lord for Forgiveness and Absolution.

Then have the decency to leave the White House [like Nixon] & fly back to Crawford, Texas and finally fix that damn white, paint-peeling shed we always see in the background! T for Texas - is now - T for "Toe-Jam".

KARL ROVE - aka MR. SLINKY - HEADS FOR THE EXITS

Bush apparatchik Karl [let me hurt you] Rove announced his intention to leave the White House at month's end. Obviously he and Tom Delay want to jump start Tom's Termite & Bug Business and aim it towards any and all Democrats. Or perhaps he'd like to devote the next few years - in private practice - to track down those 5 million e-mails that suddenly went missing from the RNC servers in the White House.

Whatever the real reason for Rove's departure the fact remains that he managed to single-handily destroy the Republican Party. What remains is not even a shadow of its former shell. What he did to the GOP was akin to what Hurricane Katrina did to New Orleans. That dream of GOP national hegemony was pounded to dust by the Rovemeister and his Monkey-Man in the White House.

Perhaps the fact that Senator Patrick Leahy's Senate Judiciary Committee has issued a subpoena compelling Rove's attendance before that Committee to answer the allegations of White House complicity in the firing of 9 U.S. Attorneys lies at the root of Rove's quick trip back to private life. It seems that Rove was personally involved in the dismissal of New Mexico's U.S. Attorney David Iglesias, a Republican. Telephone records of conversations reveal that Rove made suggestions that efforts be undertaken to have him replaced when prosecutions against alleged Democratic voter fraud in that state were not forthcoming.

Rove's foot prints are also evident in the dismissal of Bud Cummins, U.S. Attorney in Arkansas who in turn was replaced by Tim Griffin, right hand man to Karl Rove. Griffin did not last long as a U.S. Attorney and resigned hours after BBC Television ‘Newsnight’ reported that Congressman John Conyers requested the network’s evidence on Griffin’s involvement in ‘caging voters.’ Greg Palast, reporting for BBC Newsnight, obtained a series of confidential emails from the 2004 Bush-Cheney campaign. In these emails, Griffin, then the GOP Deputy Communications Director, transmitted so-called ‘caging lists’ of voters to state party leaders.

Karl Rove presided over two stolen Presidential elections [2000 + 2004] and countless smear campaigns against countless candidates. His most infamous exploit will no doubt be his public revelation of the identity of - at the time - covert CIA operative Valerie Plame during a telephone conversation with Time Magazine reporter Matthew Cooper on July 11, 2003. While not mentioning Valerie Plame by "name, Rove did clearly indicate that she worked at the "agency" - an obvious reference Cooper interpreted to mean the "CIA." Rove also added that she was working on "WMD" - aka - Weapons of Mass Destruction. The conversation concluded with Rove stating "I've already said too much."

His short-term legacy will be his exploitation of the cultural divides within this country, pitting the conservative religious community against virtually everyone else. This was brought to full fruit in the 2004 Presidential election as Rove crowed that he was able to turn out millions of conservative evangelicals to re-elect George Bush to a second term. Using God, Gays, Guns & Abortion as the main ingredients in this diabolical concoction the hate monger in the West Wing did succeed at generating over 50+ million votes for Bush.

Unfortunately for Rove, the 2006 election showed just how short-lived this New GOP majority was. Like the Mississippi River - a mile wide but an inch deep. One thing is for sure, those 9-11 swing states that figured so prominently in the U.S. Attorney firings will be in play for the GOP in the 2008 Presidential campaign. Rove can direct this battle from the sidelines, hence his early departure in his quest for a 3rd Presidential Trophy. Only a massive Democratic turnout will quash any Republican machinations at election gimmicks and reinstall a Democratic president.

TO FISA OR NOT TO FISA - THAT IS THE DILEMMA

Friday, August 3, 2007 should have been a successful day for the Democrats in Congress. They had just reached a tentative agreement with the National Intelligence Director McConnell on modifying the 1978 FISA statute to allow for the electronic eavesdropping on foreign intelligence targets. The problem was that communications between two individuals on foreign soil but routed through the United States carried with it the requirement to seek warrants from the secret FISA court.

The intelligence community and the White House had argued that this portion of the FISA law should be changed to allow for unimpeded wiretapping free from the constraints imposed by FISA. At the 11th hour Congress and the National Intelligence Director had purportedly come to a satisfactory agreement to fix this problem. However at the "stroke of midnight" the White House completely scuttled this.

The White House was not satisfied with allowing for open-ended eavesdropping on two foreign nationals both on foreign soil using the United States to route the call. Instead, the White House pressed their demand even further calling for the FISA modification to include calls where one of the parties was inside the U.S. In effect, the last-minute requirement struck at the very heart of the 1978 FISA law.

As usual, Congress "cave-in" to the President's late-hour demand and faced with the August recess - voted on Saturday, August 4, 2007 in favor of the White House's version for the legislation modifying ["gutting"] FISA. This was only possible because 16 Democratic Senators joined with the Republicans to give the President his victory in the U.S. Senate, Senators Diane Feinstein/CA and Jim Webb/VA being among those turn-coat Democratic Senators. The House saw approximately 40 Democratic Congressman vote with the Republicans to approve the White House version of the expanded wiretap legislation.

Fear predominated the motivation behind all of the Democratic legislators shamelessly siding with Republicans in this ominous vote. Clearly eager to begin their August recess and just as clearly shunning any chance to be blamed for an attack on the country while away on break, they took the easy way out and surrendered their constitutional duties as the peoples' representatives and handed the Republicans a blank check with our Fourth Amendment.

God Damn the Democrats. Give 'em enough time and they'll dismantle the entire Bill of Rights before January, 2009. I have only one more piece of advice to include here - please call your Washington representatives this week and - while they are all on recess - many of the office staff are still on hand to answer your phone calls. The bottom line is - every e-mail and phone call between someone inside this country to a friend, acquaintance, business associate or recipient party OUTSIDE this country is subject to being electronically monitored by the NSA. Every e-mail/phone call without exception. If that doesn't give one pause, I don't know what does. Any kind of privileged or attorney-client, doctor-patient communications are fair game. Boy have we come a long way in 7 years!

GONZO GOES TO WASHINGTON - & - I DON'T MEAN HUNTER S. THOMPSON

Well, Alberto "Gonzo" Gonzales sat in the hot seat this week, appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee to answer some questions on the NSA wiretapping program. He might have sat there for four hours but in that span of time he managed to break all sorts of records for outright misleading statements and outright lies.

Facing his two main questioners - Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy and Republican Senator Arlen Specter, Gonzales never got off anything close to a straight answer.

They asked him to explain the reason for his visit to the hospital bed of then-Attorney General Ashcroft who was recovering from gall bladder surgery. When pressed to explain what that visit was all about - even after he had been explicitly warned by FBI Director Robert Mueller not to visit Ashcroft's hospital room - Gonzo said the nature of his visit had only to do with an intelligence program unrelated to the NSA warrantless wiretapping program already in place at the time - but he declined to state what that "other" intelligence program was about

In his earlier testimony given before the Senate Judiciary committee Gonzo had instead stated that the visit to Ashcroft was in fact directly related to the NSA wiretap program. Additionally, he had also stated that there were no disputes within the Department of Justice about whether to continue the program. In reality, then-acting Attorney General James Comey and many others in the Justice Department found the NSA wiretapping program so illegal that they threatened to resign.

Gonzo is either (1) lying about which intelligence program he came to see Ashcroft about while at the same time insisting that it engendered no controversy within the DOJ; or (2) he has inadvertently let loose the fact that there is actually another separate surveillance program operating in this country that Congress or the American people are not even aware of.

Perhaps the clincher moment for perjury charges came when Gonzales was confronted with a May, 2004 memo that clearly was at odds with his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee wherein he testified that a March 10, 2004 meeting with the top ranking Congressional leaders (8 in all) was a briefing on intelligence matters unrelated to the NSA wiretapping program. Unfortunately, the May memo, signed by John Negroponte - the National Intelligence Director at the time - clearly disputes this claim. Negroponte clearly indicated in the memo that the meeting was centered on the NSA terrorist surveillance program.

As damaging as the Negroponte memo is the perjury pit gets even deeper. FBI Director Robert Mueller gave testimony Thursday directly contradicting Gonzales's testimony. Appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, FBI Director Mueller testified that the confrontation in Ashcroft's hospital room in 2004 was in fact over the controversial NSA surveillance program.

In addition he testified that he supported former Deputy Attorney General James Comey's assertion that Gonzales and Andrew Card, White House Chief of Staff, had tried to pressure Ashcroft to sign the reauthorization of the NSA wiretapping program. And for the first time, Mueller acknowledged that - as previously indicated by James Comey - an FBI security detail was dispatched to Ashcroft's hospital room to ensure that Comey was not removed from the room when Gonzales was there.

As of tonight 4 members of the Senate Judiciary Committee [Feinstein, Schumer, Whitehouse and Feingold] have sent a letter to solicitor general Paul Clement requesting the appointment of a special prosecutor. Republican Senator Arlen Specter point-blank told Gonzales his credibility was virtually nil. Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy said he did not trust Gonzales and said he had perjured himself.

This is an absolute constitutional showdown. The White House is faced with having the attorney general investigated for perjury while Bush doggedly maintains his support for Gonzales out of blind loyalty. Opting to call for a special prosecutor might not be the best move to make at this juncture. Impeachment seems to be the only viable means at Congress's disposal to finally put the clamps on a run-away administration and it's poster boy - Alberto Gonzales.

June 29, 2007 (EIRNS)–The momentum to force President of Vice Dick Cheney out continues to grow in Washington, with the addition of two new co-sponsors to Rep. Dennis Kucinich's H.R. 333–legislation to impeach Cheney for "high crimes and misdemeanors."

The latest co-sponsors, according to www.thomas.gov, are Rep. Hency "Hank" C. Johnson (D-Ga.) and Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), both Democratic freshmen. Freshmen, as a group, largely view the Democratic sweep of Congress in 2006 as a mandate to impeach Cheney, end the Iraq War, and rebuild the U.S. economy.

If ever there was a case for high crimes & misdemeanors against a public official, that official would be none other than Vice-President Dick Cheney. Lately it seems that he finds himself in the initial phases of self-destruction, possibly ignited by an extremely guilty conscience or just too damn much "shit" to carry any longer on those tired, slumped heart-attack ridden shoulders of his.

With the defeat of the Immigration bill this week and the cellar-bound poll ratings for President Bush the situation could not be more ripe for a "reckoning" with this thug-riddled administration. Paul O'Neil [former U.S. Treasury Secretary] was right in his book - "The Price of Loyalty". Loyalty trumps all in the Bush administration and look what it has given this nation - more scandals than perhaps all of the previous administrations in U.S. history put together.

There is simply no merit to the nay sayers who bleat that - just let them finish their term, impeachment is just a big waste of time, blah, blah, blah. To the nay sayers this writer would say --- history will judge this nation harshly for not bringing this entire administration to account before the bar of justice. and more importantly, before the court of history. Only impeachment proceedings can accomplish this.

So, Dick Cheney has a case of the "confuseds" when it comes to recognizing which branch of the government he belongs to. Sounds like someone has an "identity" crisis. Dr. "Dick" seems to think he is a separate branch of the government - alongside the Judiciary, Executive and Legislative branches. David Addington, his Chief-Enforcer seems to be supplying the intellectual firepower for this stance.

Fortunately for the Republic, the very next day, with the very real threat of a funding cut-off from the Democratically controlled House budget committee, Mr. Addington backpedaled and muted his contention that the Vice-President's office remained separate and apart from the rest of the government. Democratic Congressman Rahm Immanuel's implicit cut-off threat the day before seemed to do the trick.

God knows what Cheney has inside those full-scale metal safes he keeps in his wing of the Executive Branch. It seems that he stamps virtually every document as "Classified" and then stashes it in one of his safes to remain completely unavailable for further inspection by any agency, including the National Archives folks.

Mr. Cheney is the author of the War on Iraq with the false premise of Weapons of Mass Destruction. Dr. Evil is the progenitor of the NSA's mass warrantless wiretapping. Dr. Strange One is certainly the principal author of the torture memoranda as well as being the prime mover behind the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility.

It is noted in first-hand accounts that on September 11, 2007, while in the White House underground Executive Bunker, Cheney, Condoleeza Rice and others witnessed the televised coverage of the Twin Towers attack. One witness noted that while others were heard to be uttering moans of disbelief, Vice President Dick Cheney remained utterly mute and sphinx-like. It appears this singular event marks Dick's "extraordinary epiphany" of sorts.

Whatever the real inner-workings of Dr. Dick's mental landscape there is one thing that is quite clear. This Vice President pulls all the levers of power while hiding behind the facade of a supposedly "in-charge" President. Nothing could be further from the truth. Cheney, for all practical purposes, is Commander-In-Chief and Court of Last Resort.

Is it not time for the Democratic party to grow an extremely large pair of cajones and - with ALL DELIBERATE SPEED - seize these two men by their cajones - and render this Administration inert. It would not hurt to recapture the White House in 2008.

Therein lies the problem. With two stolen elections under their belt, perhaps Dick & George would like to go for the Trifecta in 2008. As Lincoln once said - "You can fool some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time." This remains to be seen in 2008. Let's hope not!

53-38 VOTE BY CONGRESS AGAINST ALBERTO GONZALES - IN NO-CONFIDENCE VOTE - NOT ENOUGH TO BRING TO A FINAL BINDING VOTE

Last week's "incompetent" no confidence vote on Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General was just another sign that the Democrats don't have their own house in order. They had 7 Republicans voting with them but they also had some yellow-dog democrat defectors and in the end could only muster a 53-38 vote majority, short of the 60 votes necessary to bring this matter to a final binding vote before the full Senate.

It doesn't help when your side is already missing 3 senators who are away doing some presidential campaigning [Joe Biden, Christopher Dodd, Barak Obama]. This is precisely what is meant about not having your "house in order." It also doesn't help when you have another Democratic senator laid up in intensive care, too weak to cast a vote [Tim Johnson].

Still that would have only resulted in 57 votes on the Democratic side - still 3 short of the necessary 60.

So after all is said and done it's those damn "yellow-dog" [yellow belly] Democrats who joined in with the Republicans to produce enough votes to thwart the efforts by the Democrats to bring this matter to a final full Senate floor vote. Up or down. Gonzales stays --- or Gonzales goes!

The evidence is overwhelming that this cretin is by any measure of decency or civility not fit to serve in this office - either by the letter of the law or its true spirit. If he had any class at all he would have departed long ago. If he was the usual Bush appointee he would have been sacked [but loyalty - like former U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neil remarked in his book - "The Price of Loyalty" --- has its privileges].

So here we are with a situation where the chief law enforcement officer of this country was engaged in an outright purge in the U.S. Attorney's Office of highly competent professional civil servants only to be replaced with administration apparatchicks intent on guaranteeing a Republican presidential victory in 2008 by virtue of their respective swing-state jurisdictions. There have been 9 U.S. Attorneys replaced under this Bush toady and evidence suggests that the number originally contemplated for purging was as high as 25.

Now to top all of this Gonzales himself is being looked into by an in-house Department of Justice investigatory unit. The latest concern is Gonzales' conversation with the recently departed Monica Goodling [former Justice Department official] wherein he seemed to be "coaching" Ms. Goodling on just how uninvolved he really was as Attorney General in this whole Attorney-Gate scandal.

So many scandals, so little time.

Bring on Impeachment!

DEMOCRATS DEFECATE ON THEMSELVES WITH A NONBINDING - [NO TIME-LINE] - IRAQ FUNDING BILL

Congressional Democrats soiled their own nest last week when they voted by overwhelming margins to approve George Bush's $100 billion Iraq spending bill. Rather than use their majorities in both houses of congress to fashion a bill that would require the president to operate within a time line they just caved in - again - and wrote another blank check to the president to prosecute his insane war with its insane horizon.

Insanity is repeating something - in the same way - over and over again and expecting a different outcome. The Democrats are truly insane. In no way can you use the argument that Nancy Pelosi has no choice because she needs the support of the yellow dog Democrats, many just newly elected in 2006. Nancy Pelosi is the Speaker of the House and could have simply prevented this bill from ever being voted on in the first place. And by doing so, would have forced the president to come to Congress and plead for the money - on Congress' terms.

Now, instead, George Bush will simply let the clock run out on this one. By the time September rolls around he'll probably get another "surge" of funding from Congress albeit on slightly harsher terms. But in all reality his refusal to commit to any time line will once again withstand any pressure from Congress to do otherwise.

In short, the Democrats still do not understand who they are dealing with. The man pretending to be president is no better than a careening psychopath hell-bent on dishing out evil on a mass scale to all he encounters. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are simply no match for a man so malevolently incarnate as this "decider-in-chief." Without ever-increasing pressure from their constituents Congress will continue to fight this thing to a draw, and friends, a tie game here will get us nowhere.

Right now, impeachment sounds like the only real viable alternative under these circumstances. God knows, there are numerous grounds to bring such an action. Initiating a war under false pretenses, condoning atrocities in the treatment of prisoners, condoning torture, conducting systematic mass wire tapping of U.S. citizens, deliberately allowing a great City like New Orleans to be completely decimated by a tropical hurricane are just a few of the impeachable offenses that come to mind.

No matter, the waters are rising again and this time the levees at the White House will not be able to hold back the tide that is steadily rising against it. No one person will bring this White House down, rather it will be the utterly relentless and steady stream of events that are going against this Administration. When the levee breaks, all hell will break loose.

ROVE - TURD BLOSSOM FINALLY LIVING UP TO HIS NAME!

Karl Rove will definitely be remembered for being "turd blossom" in the history books. But it won't be the kind of "turd-blossom" he was hoping for. I think he has "soiled himself" pretty well after 7 years in the Bush Administration. He is turd personified.

His latest "droppings" are featured in the U.S. Attorney-Gate scandal. No where is this more clearer than today's testimony [May 23, 2007] by former Justice Department employee, Monica Goodling. Goodling admitted that there was in fact a litmus test for prospective employees being considered by the Justice Department. The finger prints of Karl Rove are all over the place. Don't place the blame on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. He was merely a pawn. The real master-mover here is none other than Karl "The Enforcer" Rove.

To make the point even more obvious Ms. Goodling made an even more startling revelation under questioning by a Democratic Senator. Upon questioning Ms. Goodling admitted that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales was in fact aware of ongoing discussions within the Justice Department about firing various U.S. Attorneys. She even went so far as to say that she felt no need to point out to him his statements to the contrary in his appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing earlier in February with the rationale that it seemed unnecessary under the circumstances.

However you slice it or dice it, the Puppet Master, Karl Rove, has taken control of the entire Executive Branch of Government through his minions well-placed throughout the Cabinet and subcabinet levels of government. If there is any doubt about these accusations just consider the fact that each and every case where a U.S. Attorney was replaced took place in state that was a major swing-state for the Republicans in the 2008 Presidential Election. This has the mark of Karl Rove through and through - the master political manipulator, using any and all means at his disposal, however foul or injurious.

Perhaps the best way out of this dilemma is to pit Vice President Dick Cheney and Karl Rove in a death struggle against each other. They could easily cancel each other out and save all of the rest of us the bother of actually "finishing" them off ourselves.

Time will tell. But the way the mounting bad news remains unabated for this Administration since the November 2006 elections, the law of inertia may take over. Sooner or later - the machine will just come to a grinding halt - all by itself.

WOLFOWITZ & GONZALES - TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN!

Well it's "ph.d" time - piled higher & deeper.

God, the Bush Administration knows no limits on depravity and duplicity. Gonzales is fighting for his "reason d'entre" and Paul Wolfowitz has dodged a fast-moving bullet by agreeing to step aside by June 30 with a little "soft" language thrown in to assuage his colossal ego.

These bunch of nazis would never have gotten to 1st base in Europe, not even in Eastern Europe. But this country and its citizenry are only getting what they deserve. That's the price you pay for not paying attention to what is going on in your name.

Why not just do a "World Bank", give the rat-bastards until June 30th to gracefully vacate the White House [Bush, Cheney, Rice, et al.]. We could easily install an "interregnum" body to "run out the clock" on this sorry Administration.

Maybe Paraguay might take in the ex-pres & vice-pres just like the United States took in the ex- Shah of Iran.

If there is anything further to learn from this latest turn of events [Gonzales & Wolfowitz] it is that there is no bottom to this Administration. Stuff will just keep on "turning up." Witnesses will keep on turning up [witness Comey, ex-deputy Attorney General's testimony to Congress]. Ex-White House aides and ex-cabinet officials will just keep turning up via their latest memoirs.

Impeachment & indictments at this point would be the only "slam dunk" in this writer's estimation as opposed to the haphazard turn of phrase offered by the disgraced & departed ex-CIA chief, George Tenet in his assessment of the likelihood of a real cause a belli vis-a-vis Iraq.

What chumps. What a group of chumps. But it takes one to vote for one. America, look in the mirror and see the ultimate chump.

The level of mendacity has reached new historical highs unequalled in the earth's history. It's time for the paddy wagons to pull up to the service entrance at the White House and just haul the entire Administration away.
